PROFIBUS Cable

PROFIBUS Cable Set Up

The set up of a PROFIBUS cable for RS485 transmission technology is: 2 cores and twisted. Different types of cables for different applications are available. PROFIBUS cable set up type A (violet coating) is recommended for RS485 transmission technology. The outer coat is a flexible metal mesh. The shield of the cores is their electric insulation. The copper core transmits bus signals. In the PROFIBUS cable set up green is the color for core A and red is the color for core B.

Product Overview

Connect Field Devices via Single Cable

Modern machines and plants in the industrial sectors have more and more sensors and actuators which have to be connected to an automation device (SPS). Field busses reduce the effort and cost for wiring. Instead of using many single cores, the devices are connected to a single bus cable. PROFIBUS is one of the most important field bus systems. Since 1989 it is used and standardized in IEC 61158/61784. The set up of PROFIBUS cables and the assignment of PROFIBUS cables is standardized.

PROFIBUS Cable Assignment

In plug and socket shield, GND and communication signals have to be assigned to the correct pins in accordance to PROFIBUS cable assignment standard. M12 connectors are used for connection of fieldbus devices in the field. PROFIBUS cable assignment of the M12 socket is:

  • Pin 1: + 5 V DC
  • Pin 2: A
  • Pin 3: GND
  • Pin 4: B
  • Pin 5: Shield

D-Sub connectors are suited for use in the control cabinet. The D-Sub socket has the following PROFIBUS cable assignment:

  • Pin 1: Shield (not recommended)
  • Pin 3: B
  • Pin 5: GND
  • Pin 6: + 5 V DC
  • Pin 8: A

Fieldbus Operating Conditions

Cables for industrial use often have to cope with high stress due to temperature, humidity, dust, vibration, shocks, folding and so on. Especially in mobile applications in robotics complex movements are possible which present high stress for cables. Combination of torsion and bending movements put a lot of stress on cables.

PROFIBUS Cable Installation

The preparation of a PROFIBUS cable for the installation has to be done diligently and in accordance to the PROFIBUS cable set up. There are special tools available for removing the insulation at the end of the cable. Special attention has to be paid so that the shielding is not interrupted by the transition of the cable to the plug. The standardized assignment of PROFIBUS cables is to be taken into account for the pin assignment.

Fieldbus Plugs

Plug connectors with terminating resistors which are externally connectible are available. Depending on the type an additional D-Sub plug is integrated which alles the connection of diagnosis and programming devices.

PROFIBUS is a trade mark.
