M12 Socket

M12 Socket Variants

M12 plug in connectors are one of the most important connectors in the industry. The design of M12 socket and plug has proved the test of time with its durability and simple installation as a standard round plug in connection for use in the field as well as in the control cabinet. The M12 socket is the female part of the plug in connection which is used for typical quick connect solutions.

Product Overview

M8 and M23 plug in connections are also of importance for use in industrial applications. Coding of the M12 Socket as well as the assignment of M12 sockets are both standardized. M12 sockets may be used for transmission of data and power within field bus systems. Additionally the connection on the field side via IO Link can be done via an M12 socket. IO Link Masters are equipped with 5-pole sockets.

Standardized M12 Socket Coding

Coding is used to exclude errors due to falsely plugging in or connection of incompatible transmission standards. A variety of standards is available for the M12 socket coding.

DIN EN 61076-2-101 is the standard for A-, B-, C- and D-coding. IEC 61076-2-111 is the standard for K-, L-, S- and T-coding which can be applied for M12 socket coding. X-Coding is standardized in DIN EN 61076-2-109. The standard for Y-coding is found in DIN EN 61076-2-113.

A-coded M12 socket coding is used for classic signal transmission. PROFIBUS and Interbus systems us plug in connectors which are B-coded. D-Coded plugs are suited for the high data rates required in Industrial Ethernert. L-, K-, S- and T-Coded sockets can be used for energy transmission. Additionally data may be transmitted depending on the type of plug in connection (PROFINET(R)). Power distributers have multiple connections with sockets to bundle and distribute power. X-Coding is the base of fast industrial development of 10 Gbit/s technology. Y-Coded conector faces enable simultaneous transmission of data (100 MBit/s) and power.

M12 Socket Assignment for Industrial Network Standards

M12 sockets may be used in industry typical applications. For the connection of IO-Link components in the field a connection system with an appropriate level of protection against environmental impacts such as dust or humidity should be used. High standards such as IP65 and IP67 are common in this are of application. M12 sockets and plugs which conform to these standards are available. The standard for M12 socket assignment in IO-Link is set in IEC 60947-5-2. The power supply of an IO-Link device is set to be an M12 socket. M12 sockets may be used for the connection of PROFIBUS components. M12 assignments for PROFIBUS are available as well.
