What is a Sensor Line?

Sensor lines are used to bridge a distance to higher level network components which can connect to a field bus or an industrial ethernet. The output of a sensor can be digital or analog depending on its type. In both cases they have to be transmitted unaltered and correctly to the higher level network component. This results in specific requirements to the execution, quality and installation of the sensor line.

The suitability of sensor lines for a specific assignment is partially determined by the material of the coat. Several materials are available. They include PVC sensor lines and other types of materials. The cable material for sensor lines can be bought by the meter. Cables by the meter for PVC sensor lines and PUR Sensor are available in a number of variations.

A deciding factor for the selection of a sensor line is the delivery time, availability and quality which can be guaranteed by the manufacturer. These parameters determine the effort and cost for installation and maintenance. Additionally it should be taken into account that sensors and actuators are becoming more and more intelligent (Industry 4.0). Sensor lines have to cover a wide range of applications. This includes transmission of analog signals, connection via IO Link as well as direct connection of a sensor to an industrial ethernet.

Installation of Sensor Lines

During installation of sensor lines several requirements have to be fulfilled. Depending on the design of a sensor line and the set up of the cores a specific bending radius has to be met. The bending radius may differ for a moving application from the bending radius for a fixed installation. The material used in the sensor line has an important role in determining the flexibility. A PVC sensor line can have a smaller bending radius than sensor line made of a different material.

Stress may be put on the sensor line by bending or pulling forces. The wiring of a sensor line should be done in a way that a certain amount of flexibility is possible without creating additional stress on a cable. Further hints and requirements for installation of sensor lines can be found on the data sheet and the installation recommendations of the manufacturer.

Sensor Lines M8 and Sensor Lines M12

Sensor lines are supplied in several types of ready-made configuration including a plug. Different types of plug variations are available. It includes sensor line M8 and sensor line M12 which are common in automation technology.

For installation in the field, sensor lines conform to types of protection such as IP65, IP67 and IP68 are required. Sensor lines M8 and sensor lines M23 with plug can be purchased ready-made.
