Protection Type

Help for Choosing the Ideal Component: The Electric Protection Type

The protection type indicates which electric components are suited for certain areas. The components do not only include electric consumers or generators but also the peripheral material such as installation equipment. The reason for the classification of these materials into a protection type is to eliminate potential dangers during use. The protection type is indicated as a two digit code plus an optional letter. ISO 20653 and DIN EN 60529 are the standards which define each protection type. Each code begins with the indicators "IP". This is the abbreviation for "International Protection". The terms protection type and protection class are often used interchangeably. Technically this is wrong since the "protection class" has a completely different meaning. This is a brief overview of the eight protection types. The table of contents can be used to jump to the corresponding protection type.

Protection Type IP-20

Product Overview

The protection type IP-20 defines protection of electric components by the digit code 2 and 0. The number 2 refers two ISO 20653 which means the component is protected against penetration of solid foreign objects with a diameter that's bigger than 12.5 mm. According to DIN EN 60529 the 2 indicates the component can't be penetrated with a finger. The second digit, 0, indicates the component does not have protection against water. A typical example for protection type IP-20 is a case without seal.

Protection Type IP-54

Product Overview

Components with protection type IP-54 are fully protected against contact. In addition this protection type is protected against spray water hitting from any side.

Protection Type IP-65

Product Overview

Components of protection type IP-65 are fully protected against contact. In addition they are sufficiently protected against hose water.

Protection Type IP-66

Product Overview

Components belonging to protection type IP-66 are resistant to strong hose water. This protection type was introduced to be able to clean very dirty cases with a hose without water entering the inside.

Protection Type IP-67

Product Overview

Protection type IP-67 indicates that a component is protected against temporarily submerging into water.

Protection Type IP-68

Product Overview

Protection type IP-68 defines that a component is protected against permanent submerging into water. Dive pumps are therefore usually designed in accordance with this protection type.

Protection Type IP-69K

Product Overview

Protection Type IP-69K is the highest protection type. It includes components that are permanently exposed to high Solution and therefore have to be cleaned intensely. Components that conform to this protection type can be cleaned with a high pressure cleaner and even hot steam. This protection type was developed for street vehicles in particular.
