M8 Socket

The M8 socket is the female counterpart of the M8 plug. Both together form a tight connection. They are threaded together by using an outside thread. The zinc die casting knurl of the M8 socket is rated for a torque of up to 1.7 Nm. This allows connections to nut just solely be permanent. If equipped with an appropriate seal they are even waterproof. The recommended torque to tighten the connection is 0.4 Nm.

Number of contacts M8 Socket

The maximum number of contacts of an M8 plug in connection is 8 contacts. The operational capability of such a big number of contacts in a small space is very limited. The high number of contacts lowers the space in between them. This limits the amount of voltage since otherwise leaps or partial currents may occur.

Use of the M8 Socket

Much more common than the 8-pole variant is the 3-pole M8 socket or the 4-pole M8 socket. Both types are usable for hybrid, control and data lines. Hybrid lines in addition to a core for control and data lines an additional core for power. The power for an M8 socket is limited to 30 V AC or 60 V DC. This power supply is completely sufficient for actuators with a lower need for power such as LED lights, weak actuating motors or electro pneumatic valves.

M8 sockets with 5 poles are especially relevant for use in powerful data connections. The lines can easily be put into the tight space of a 5-pole M8 socket. A regular data exchange between IO Moduls is possible through 5 parallel lines. A limiting factor is the length of the line. Since the longer the line the longer its resistor a line with an M8 socket can only be used for a limited distance. Further distances therefore require lines with a bigger diameter.

Designs of the M8 Socket

M8 Sockets are the counterpart of the M8 plug. The socket provides an extension for lines to extend an existing line that is equipped with an M8 plug. In most cases the M8 socket is located right at the connection. The following components may be connected:

• Connections for Data Lines

Its smaller diameter allows a place saving installation. The installation and maintenance can be simplified by using specifically customized M8 plugs. Angled plugs are especially effective. They can be perfectly installed on the M8 socket and lower unwanted transverse and shear forces.

The stability of an M8 plug in connection allows them to be drag chain compatible. If used in a moving application drag chain, values of the connected line have to be taken into account. A special torque key should be used to tighten the plug in connections.
