Halogen Free cables

Why Halogen Free Cables?

Halogens are chemical elements which have an important part in plastic industry. They help to inexpensively create desired long chain molecules and are very easy to use. One of the most commonly known plastics containing halogen is PVC which is often used to insulate cables. A problem of insulation containing halogen is they are easily inflammable. Additionally when burning toxic gases are created which present an imminent danger even higher than the heat if a fire is caused. PVC and similar products present another danger since they contribute in spreading the fire because of their easy inflammability. A warning example is the fire at the Düsseldorf Airport in 1996 for which the use of cable isolations containing halogen was the major reason. Therefore today in permanent installation of cable connections it is mandatory to use halogen free cables.

What is a halogen free cable?

Halogen free cables are regular power and data connections which coating is made of flame retardant materials. Instead of inflammable PVC materials like polyamide, polypropylene, silicone or EPDM are being used.

Advantages of Halogen Free Cables

Halogen free cables do not create toxic gases in case of a fire. They hardly burn and if they do no smoke is created. They do not expand a fire and do not decrease vision. Halogen free cables additionally offer the highest amount in legal security for present and future. Therefore it is recommended to use these types of cables not just in mandatory areas but if possible everywhere.
