GSDML-File

What is a GSDML File?

GSDML is short for "Generic Station Description Markup Language". The GSDML file is a mandatory part of each Profinet IO Device. Without this file, the device will not get a certification in accordance with the Profinet standard. The ending "ML" shows that for the creation of the GSDML file, the formatting language XML is used. XML is related to the website language HTML but generally used for documentation of all types. Today XML is the standard for editorial systems in technical editing. The reason is that modular writing and reusing of text fragments is supported.

GSDML File Explanation

The GSDML file contains all relevant information necessary for signal transmission:

  • Identification of the device
  • Device type and family
  • Short description in user language
  • Manufacturer
  • Name of the module
  • Part number of the module

Nowadays, the XML syntax is interpretable by use of a common and sometimes even free parser. It can be used for all types of documents: e.g. data sheets, device descriptions, user manuals. The obligation to deliver the GSDML file significantly simplifies the implementation and general handling of an I/O module within the Profinet standard. This agreement ensures a major part of the operational readiness of a Profibus system. Changing, expanding or the replacement of a single module is possible without a major amount of research thanks to the GSDML file. This is a major part in ensuring the security of a plant.
