EtherNet/IP

What is EtherNet/IP?

"IP" is short for "Internet Protocol". Within network technology this term generally describes the individual address of a sending and receiving element. The IP address of a control unit, a sensor, a network knot or an actuator has to be known to precisely trigger them. "EtherNet/IP" is the fitting of address technology into the Ethernet technology. Contrary to the commonly known "Internet Protocol", IP in "EtherNet/IP" is short for "Ethernet Industrial Protocol". In their sense these terms are comparable.

Advantage EtherNet/IP

The main advantage of EtherNet/IP is its ability to create real-time EtherNet networks very quickly. Bus cycles of under 100 micro seconds can be reached with the help of this protocol.

Areas of Application EtherNet/IP

EtherNet Industrial Protocol is best suited for areas of production and monitoring where the shortest possible reaction time is required. Production cycles are minimized and it enables to immediately react to interferences. On one hand this minimizes production of faulty parts, on the other hand it also lowers the risk of failure for machinery used in production. A special EtherNet Industrial Protocol was developed for  tjhe processing industry. The "Advanced Physical Layer" is a protocol created for especially quick or sensitive production processes. This protocol even exceeds the performance of regular EtherNet/IP. The most important parameters within APL include: durability, process reliability and a high data transmission rate.
