Changeover Relay

Product Overview

What is a changeover Relay?

A relay is a switch for high voltages. A relay is a suitable mean of protection to avoid a user or a sensitive part getting too close to high voltage. A mechanic switch is activated by a small electric impulse, often by use of an electro magnetic coil. Depending on the design of the relay one out of three conditions can be triggered:

  • Close
  • Open
  • Change

A closer closes a previously open or interrupted circuit. The opener does the opposite: by using an opener relay a previously closed circuit is interrupted and the connected components are switched off. A changeover relay controls two circuits which are used in alternation. If one circuits is interrupted by the changeover relay, it immediately switches the second circuit on. Upon the next activation of the relay the process is reversed.

Advantages of a changeover Relay

A major advantage of a changeover relay is the safe handling of electric circuits with high voltages. The changeover relay not only protects the user against high voltages, it also protects connected components from having a negative effect on each other. The switch of one circuit to another with a switch over relay is very reliable. If one circuit is active the other one is definitely switched off. This increases the safety of the entire system.
